Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When she was young the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She attended school there. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties: in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. In New York, she was employed in a bar as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. There, she made ends meet with her ushering duties during the day while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
